The Importance of Spinal Alignment and Balanced Leg Length for Pain Release and General Health
“Everything in nature, whether in the animate or inanimate world, takes place according to rules, although we do not always know these rules. Water falls according to the laws of gravity, and in animals locomotion also takes place according to rules. All nature, indeed, is nothing but a combination of phenomena which follow rules and nowhere is there any irregularity.”
- Immanuel Kant, 18th Century German Philosopher
There’s a little known secret rule about your daily relationship to the force of gravity as an upright being. Understand it and take the necessary action steps to get in line with it, and I promise your quality of life will be forever enhanced.
Standing up straight isn’t just a cosmetic social concern. Research is confirming that deviations from ideal postural alignment not only increase the likelihood you’ll develop pain in your back, neck, head, or extremities, but also that your overall level of health will decline.
Nobel Laureate Dr. Roger Sperry’s investigations revealed that “Better than 90% of the energy output of the brain is used in relating the physical body to its gravitational field. The more mechanically distorted a person is, the less energy is available for thinking, metabolism, and healing.”
How much essential energy are you losing? How long has this been occurring beneath the radar screen of your attention while you’re occupied with todays urgent demands? What’s been the cumulative cost to your health?
As a doctor of chiropractic, people unfortunately don’t come for help until pain dominates their attention and daily life activities are compromised. However upon examination, the extent of spinal decay and nervous system disturbance verifies poor function for years to decades. They have been losing the battle with gravity, wasting energy, and damaging weight-bearing parts due to ongoing imbalances, just like a misaligned wheel speeds tire wear.
Pain isn’t the critical issue. It’s only an effect that may come and go; an intermittent indicator of an unresolved condition. Therefore my focus is on locating the places where the nervous system is getting irritated as it travels through its spinal housing, painful or not.
I locate and correct subluxations in the spine. A subluxation is a misalignment secondary to physical, chemical, or emotional stress, sufficient to disturb normal nervous system communication. One aspect involves excessive stimulation of the muscles along one side of the back, twisting the pelvis and pulling one leg short. This alteration of posture can begin anywhere in the spine, but quickly distorts the entire frame. Research is verifying that this pattern usually begins with birth or some other early childhood trauma. It’s rarely detected and therefore creates damage well into adulthood.
An original research study in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research in November, 2004, revealed two powerful and disturbing findings in individuals where leg length inequality persisted without correction.
First, they had significantly more intense back pain that was more likely to be recurrent.
Second, they also had a lower measure of general health, particularly in the mental health index. The studies assessed depression, stress, and life satisfaction. The amount of mental component score decrease in the distorted posture/short leg group was associated with a 55% increase in the likelihood of depression, a 67% increase in the likelihood of negative stress, and a 47% decrease in the perceived level of life satisfaction.
Subluxations led to leg length inequality, then a measured decrease in general health on the SF-12 mental component test, but typically no symptoms yet. The condition persisted until pain appeared leading to treatment. At that point tests revealed significant physical impairment and continued impairment of social function. Treatment then restored leg length balance, alleviated the physical and social impairments, and resolved the pain.
These research findings are powerful. They indicate that general health, especially the mental/social component can be compromised long before pain appears, just like disc and joint arthritic breakdown in the spine, hips, and knees.
Trusting that pain will always appear when a health condition begins will consistently lead you down a road to ruin. It is frequently a later stage message as in dental cavities, heart disease, and cancer.
Have your spinal balance and nervous system function measured today. Don’t wait for a crisis.
