I have had countless patients during their initial consultation tell me about all of their efforts to force the pain to go away. “I’ve tried several over-the-counter medications and multiple drugs my doctor has prescribed, and none of them have worked,” they say again and again. I’ve responded by saying, “It’s great that they didn’t work!” That usually elicits a look of surprise and confusion.
Then I explain that their condition probably isn’t due to a shortage of ibuprofen or Vicodin®. “Since your pain has refused to be masked, it has forced you to keep searching and find me. Now we can locate the real cause, apply a true solution, and help you finally get well.”
Just as Christopher Reeve would have been willing to feel pain again simply to feel at all, the same is true of people with Hansen’s disease (otherwise known as leprosy). This is a chronic bacterial infectious disease that can cause severe deformity of the feet, hands, and face.
This condition may result in permanent nerve damage and leads to loss of sensation in the affected areas. Burns and injuries may go unnoticed and untreated as a result.
Do you see how pain is critically important to let us know when tissues are damaged? Then we can make the necessary changes—our ally to the rescue.
I once read a story about a man with leprosy who witnessed someone failing to open a locked door. He saw that the key wouldn’t turn, so he offered his assistance. Imagine this: The lack of pain sensation in his hands allowed him to twist the stuck key until it was bent and had sliced his finger all the way down to the bone.
Normally, the alarm warning of pain would force a person to stop and conclude that the lock couldn’t be opened. In this case, however, he could run right through the red light and not even notice. He had no pain, therefore he had no ally.

<Pain Perspective>
Pain has been designed into us with an important self-preserving purpose. It requires our attention, discerning, understanding, and willingness to take appropriate action in a reasonable time frame to prevent permanent damage.
