Respiratory Recovery Research
A 1997 article published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research discussed eighty-one children under chiropractic care that took part in a self-reported asthma related impairment study. The children were assessed before and two months after chiropractic care using an asthma impairment questionnaire.

“Significantly lower impairment rating scores were reported for 90% of subjects 60 days after chiropractic care in comparison to their pre-chiropractic scores. In addition, 31% of the children voluntarily decreased their dosage of medication by an average of 67% while under care. Twenty- four of the patients who reported asthma attacks thirty days prior to the study had significantly decreased attacks by an average of 45%”.

Peet and others reported encouraging results with eight pediatric patients with medically diagnosed asthma. “They had never received chiropractic care prior to the study. After only ten adjustments the children demonstrated an average increase in peak flow rate of 25% and seven of the eight were able to reduce or discontinue their medication. All participants showed measurable improvement on their x-rays which correlated with their asthma symptom progress”.
Kessinger reported on a study of 58 patients after they had received chiropractic adjustments for correction of upper neck subluxations (misalignments with nervous system disturbance). “Forced expiratory volume (FEV) and forced vital capacity (FVC) were measured before care and two weeks afterward. 57% of the group was considered to have abnormal lung function at the start”.
“Statistically significant changes were revealed over the two-week study. In fact, 42% of the abnormal group actually tested within normal limits at the end. The normal population also showed meaningful increases”.
Masarsky and Masarsky in their book Somatovisceral Aspects of Chiropractic discuss how the act of breathing requires the undisturbed communication of both the autonomic nervous system to the lungs and motor nervous system to the skeletal muscles. Both emanate from the neck and upper back and therefore subluxations from either area can hinder your vitally important ability to breathe.
The Masarskys proceed to review a recent mortality study which demonstrated that “individuals with depressed FEV scores are more likely to die from all causes, not just respiratory diseases, at 4 years, 15 years, and 24 years post-measurement, when compared with those at or above expected values”.

<Health Restoration Insight>
“Apparently, reduced lung function is a good general indicator of a person’s vulnerability to a wide variety of serious health problems. Conversely, improving lung function through chiropractic care can be seen as a contribution to a person’s overall vitality”.
