Read Part 1 here
I sat down with Pierre to review his progress demonstrated on the computer re-exam and other objective findings after the three weeks of care, and discuss his feelings about our accomplishments thus far. He reported a 50% reduction in neck stiffness, 60% in fatigue, an amazing 100% in his lower back pain, and a staggering 90% in his lifelong chronic depression!
Pierre was elated, at least as filtered through his face that wasn't familiar with expressing happiness.
He said, "I feel like something terrific is happening in my life. If I felt any better, I would be out of control!" He said he had never felt this good and that he had so much more energy, even a buzz through the afternoon, without his previously required nap.
Then one day soon thereafter, Pierre was trying to do some exercises on the floor that I had given him in hopes of further stabilizing his lower back improvement. They caused an unexpected major flare-up in his back pain and an immediate return of his depression to a level of 45 (on the 1-100 scale).
This time it took a bit longer, but suddenly after an adjusting session one day, the back pain cleared again and the depression was dramatically diminished to a level of 15.
Pierre, who was once skeptical and could only imagine his lower back improving somewhat, is now absolutely convinced through this powerful personal experience, that his emotional state is intimately connected with the state of his nervous system, which is also intertwined with the position and motion of his spine.
"Lack of spinal motion leads to a diminishing of emotion." - Dr. Donald Epstein
Neuroscientist Dr. Candace Pert said, "I believe happiness is what we feel when our bio-chemicals of emotion are flowing freely throughout our systems in a smooth and rhythmic movement. Physiology and emotions are inseparable. I believe that happiness is our natural state. Only when our systems get blocked, shut down, and disarrayed do we experience the mood disorders that add up to unhappiness in the extreme. The mind often must be healed through the body."
This is powerful stuff!
Pierre was surprised but thankfully amazed by this discovery and the new enhanced daily quality of life it has afforded him.
A study published last November in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research involved fifteen clinically depressed individuals with a mean age of forty-three who also possessed subluxations (misalignments with nervous system disturbance) in the upper neck. The baseline level of depression and any post-treatment changes were measured using the standard Beck Depression Inventory. The mean score was reduced from seventeen to eight after the spinal corrective intervention.
Eleven of the fifteen in the study experienced marked improvement. This suggests that chiropractic may be a valid option to benefit a significant percentage of the depressed population without the risk of medication side effects.
Allow me to briefly share with you a powerful study, which established an association between chiropractic care and an enhanced state of well-being.
According to this eighteen-month study by Drs. Blum and Holder, conducted at the Exodus Addiction Treatment Center Hospital in Miami, Florida, and published in the prestigious Molecular Psychiatry journal, chiropractic (and specifically the Torque Release Technique and Integrator instrument I utilize), produced an extremely statistically significant improvement in anxiety and depression scores on a battery of seven psychological inventories when compared to placebo controls.
What required six months using the typical Betty Ford model for reduction in anxiety was accomplished in one month with the addition of precision instrument spinal adjustments. Depression reductions usually requiring twelve months with the Ford approach were achieved in only one month with adjustments.
Amazing!
Depression is expected to be the second largest killer after heart disease by 2020 and studies show it to be a contributing factor to fatal coronary disease. Therefore, who knows how many other health compromising conditions Pierre has also been spared.
Do you have mental/emotional pressures and challenges that are causing you to struggle? You may want to consider a detailed chiropractic evaluation of your spinal/neural integrity with an eye toward improving the flow of neurochemicals through your brain and body. You could be released from a stuck dysfunctional pattern and know greater joy, maybe for the first time in a long while.
"I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know that just to be alive is a grand thing." -Agatha Christie
