Creeping Along On The Freeway Of Life? (Part 1)
Are you noticing as I increasingly am, that your life is passing at an incredibly rapid pace? It was just Christmas and now it's Valentine's Day. Very soon summer will arrive followed by the sale ads and decorations of another holiday season.
As I watched Paul McCartney perform at halftime at the Super Bowl last weekend, I noted the reference to his age of 62 being close to that mentioned in his 1967 song "When I'm 64". How strange! Where did all of that time go? 40 years have passed since "I Want To Hold Your Hand" had all the teen girls screaming and now two Beatles are dead. I still feel so young inside, but my grey hair betrays the aging process. Hmmm...
Given this short span on Earth, what are you seeking to experience, contribute, or achieve? I believe each of us have important purposes to fulfill and something we are uniquely designed to offer during our stay here. Washington Irving said, "Great minds have purposes, others have wishes."
Where are you headed on the freeways of your life? How is your journey going?
We all enter this life as babies with the genetic potential to become. We are pure possibility and continual growth toward the full realization and expression of that potential is our natural design. Oprah Winfrey said, "We can't become what we need to be by remaining what we are".
We grow through challenges that develop strength, amazing adaptive resources, and new wiring patterns in our nervous systems. We become greater as we surmount life's inherent hurdles. But are we?
Are we fully integrating these challenging experiences and remaining whole and healthy, or are we finding ourselves excessively threatened by them and ending up fragmented, blocked from progressing, and declining into illness and early decay, however silently?
Picture yourself flying in a helicopter over the freeways of Los Angeles sometime other than during rush hour. There is a great amount of traffic but it is flowing along smoothly. Cars are merging in from and exiting to surface streets and other freeways with apparent ease.
This is like you and other people cruising along in life facing challenging circumstances but rising to meet them and continuing forward unimpeded. It is also like the smooth flow of nerve impulses and neurochemicals carrying intelligent information throughout our bodies allowing us to continually adapt to all of our environmental stressors and remain vibrantly alive and healthy. Now, let me ask you a question. What happens to the flow of traffic when even the smallest accident occurs on that freeway?
It can bring it to a near standstill, right? The smooth flow is reduced to a creeping motion of starts and stops. Freeway interchanges and surface street on-ramps back up and people are delayed in getting to their destinations. This can be incredibly frustrating when time is a critical factor in your travels.
What are the personal growth and health analogies I want to draw from the freeway accident scenario? I contend that we have collisions with the people and circumstances of our lives on a daily basis.
The concussion of forces within us ranges from minor fender benders which accumulate body damage over time, to the rare "totaling" of our vehicle. These can all add up to blocking us from achieving our full potential and sabotaging our health to the point of serious illness. Cancer and various autoimmune diseases may be at least in part a result of this blockage.
The collisions are sometimes physical, as in suffering a whiplash in an auto accident, but are far more commonly occurring in the mental/emotional realm. I believe these are often far more damaging due to our failure to notice and attend to them. We don't realize their impact as we tend to submerge them unresolved and grant them residence within us.
Next month we will examine some of these collisions, their physical and emotional impact, and the most critical action step to permit you to move forward at true freeway speeds toward your potential while maximizing your energy and vital health.
